Straight from Germany - Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Most folks around this time of year are trying to stick to their New Years resolutions.. budget, eat healthier, get in shape…

Here’s a perfect way to support your local farmer, make a big batch meal (budget) and eat healthier (sorry, I can’t help you with the get in shape part, unless you want to come bale hay this summer?? Asking for a friend..).

Plus, you’ll have a ton extra to freeze for those stupid crazy days and you have no idea what to make for supper!

Both Scott and I have ancestors from Germany. While my Sister-in-law is saying my family should do the 23 & me testing (brown hair/brown eyes), I’m not ready for the government to make a clone out of me just yet.

Although, I could use a helping hand in the house. Just sayin’

Scott’s Great-Grandma has passed down this recipe for homemade spaghetti sauce, and it is to die for!!

Now, it does make a GIANT batch, so feel free to cut it in half or just freeze in smaller containers. Or just have '“spaghetti-for-days” like we do, LOL!

It’s SO YUM, you won’t mind having leftovers.

German Spaghetti Sauce

You’ll need a huge pot:

Sauce

  • 7-8 cans tomato puree (use 1 can to add water to your pot of sauce)

  • 2 TBS sugar

  • 1 onion (chopped)

  • 1.5 c grated parmesan cheese

  • 2-3 cloves garlic (minced or pressed)

  • 4 cans mushrooms (drain 2)

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp pepper

  • 1/2 tsp Oregano

Mix all the above ingredients into a large pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, turn the burner to low and simmer.

4 packs Hoffman’s Little Acres non-GMO Milk-fed Italian Sausage links:

Brown the Italian sausage in a skillet, but no need to fully cook, it will finish cooking in the sauce. Once browned, add them to the boiling pot of sauce.

Meatballs

  • 6-7 lbs. pastured ground beef

  • 3 - Hoffman’s Little Acres Free-Range non-GMO Eggs

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1 clove garlic (minced or pressed)

  • 1 small onion (chopped)

Mix all the above ingredients and form into meatballs (however big or small you like). Brown on all sides (again, no need to fully cook) in a skillet, then add to pot of sauce.

After adding the meat you may need to turn up the heat until it boils again. Simmer all day. We do this on a Saturday when there’s not much going on.

Scott rarely helps me in the kitchen, but he actually makes this almost by himself.

Serve on your favorite pasta with a side of garlic bread or salad.

ENJOY!!
