The wandering calf
A week past her due date, our cow, Dot, had her calf.
Being that long overdue I figured it would be a bull calf (it was), but that’s beside the point ;)
Dot and her baby stayed together in the pasture that night by themselves. We don't like other moms trying to boot the new mom out of the way to steal the calf.
BUT, the next morning the little boy was nowhere to be found!
Dot wasn’t calling for him and he wasn’t calling for his mama, so we had no idea where he was.
Plus he's a mini jersey, so when he lays down in the tall grass or the surrounding cornfield, it would be impossible to see him.
I walked to the neighbors to see if he wandered over there with all the other calf noises.
Nothing.
We figured we'd give it a little time to see or hear something.
Well, Scott couldn't focus on milking until he found that calf. So he took off on the 4-wheeler down the road he went.
And there he was in the ditch. Like, right by the road!
I'm so glad he didn't hop up and get run over by the cars that fly down our road!
He wasn't terribly far away, but Scott drove the 4-wheeler in the middle of the ditch right past the little guy and didn't see him and the calf didn't budge.
It was only on his way back home he caught a glimpse of the tan little blob in the grass.
Stubborn little cutie!
How can you resist that face though?? (The calf, not Scott)
Look at those eyes LOL!!
Now that we have a fresh cow (a cow that just had a baby), we’ll have extra milk to separate cream.
I’ve been missing that delectable liquid gold in my coffee.
